I found these iconic prints at a thrift store and wanted to share with the world. From my research they were produced anywhere from 1900-1930. Printing production at that time was moving away from labor intensive lithographs and these are early halftone prints. A camera captured a high-quality photograph of Herring's original 1848 painting (Pharaoh's Chariot Horses). That image was projected through a fine grid mesh onto a chemically treated metal plate, breaking the image down into a matrix of microscopic dots.
As these are historical prints, each piece features unique variations in tone—ranging from deep black and gray to warm sepia—depending on the specific production run. There is yellowing on the edges due to age.
